More on web hosting

Guides on choosing, buying and running web hosting: what the plans actually include, how to pick between shared hosting and a VPS, how to move a site from another host, and what makes a hosting account fast or slow. Written for business owners and the developers who build for them.

Most hosting advice online is a comparison table written by someone paid per click. These articles are written by the people who administer the servers, which means they also say when the cheaper plan is enough, when a faster server will not fix a slow page, and when the problem is the website rather than the hosting.

If what you are looking for is not here, our team answers questions by ticket and live chat around the clock — including the ones that are really about whether you need to buy anything at all. We would rather tell you a cheaper plan covers it than sell you something you will cancel in a month.

Everything we publish is written by the people who administer the servers, so it reflects what we actually do rather than what reads well. Where something depends on your setup, we say so instead of giving an answer that only holds in one case.

• WordPress hosting — One-click installs with server-level caching.
• Cloud hosting — More headroom for a site that is growing.
